Guided Fly Fishing on the Rio Grande

Gold Medal Water. Drift Boat Expertise. An Experience Worth the Drive to Del Norte.

Fly Fishing the Rio Grande

One of Colorado's Best Kept Secrets is Right Here in the San Luis Valley

The Rio Grande near Del Norte does not get the same press as some of Colorado’s more famous trout rivers and that is exactly what makes it so good. The Gold Medal designation covers a stretch of water that holds Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Brown Trout in numbers and sizes that consistently surprise first-time visitors. The river runs cold and clear through canyon walls and open meadows, with hatches that shift through the season in ways that keep even experienced anglers engaged from first cast to last. Whether you are throwing dry flies during a Caddis hatch or working nymphs through a deep canyon run, this river has a way of making every day on the water feel like you found something the crowds have not caught up to yet.

About Jackalope Anglers

Built on the Rio Grande by a Guide Who Has Fished Everywhere and Chose to Stay Here

Jackalope Anglers was founded by Jack, a professional fly fishing guide with over a decade of experience rowing drift boats on some of the finest trout water in the country. From the Yellowstone River in Wyoming to remote salmon rivers in Alaska to the Blue, Arkansas, Colorado, and Roaring Fork Rivers of his home state, Jack has spent his career learning rivers the way only a working guide can. He discovered the Rio Grande early in his career, kept coming back, and eventually made the move to Del Norte to build an outfitter around the water he loves most. Jackalope Anglers exists because this river deserves to be shared with people who will appreciate it, and because Jack is exactly the kind of guide who knows how to make that happen.

Jack was patient and respectful while dealing with our two families renting gear. 6 kids and 3 adults. He fitted all of the gear perfectly while also taking care of other customers. He was understanding and very knowledgeable. We can really trust him with our mountain experiences. His employee, Logan, was also just as awesome. Very good people. Reasonable pricing for rentals. We will be back to his shop next year to rent again.

Stopped here on the way to wolf creek to repair my board, the owner was able to help us out an turn it around very quickly and the board looks fantastic. There was also an adorable doggo to greet you at the door.

Our family went on a tubing/kayaking trip on the Rio Grande. The river trip was excellent. My only advice is to ask the owner lots of questions about where to exit around the dam (there is a dam in one part of the river) and where to exit the river. The signs were not clear and the instructions were not that clear. But the owner (Jack) is very nice. We called him with questions and he was very attentive. I recommend supporting this local business.

Fly fishing was on my bucket list for too long. Jack delivered (within 15 minutes of the start of the float). In short, Jack is great guide, casting coach - and a wonderful human being to be with while enjoying a perfect day floating on a beautiful strech of the river just outside a cool little town (Del Norte, Co.).

Jack runs a great little shop and will help you get on some fish with his extensive knowledge of the rivers. He also will go out of his way to get you outfitted for other river adventures or skiing/snowboarding. One of the only shops around that focuses on backcountry and has a nice selection of split-boards. Small shop but definitely worth stopping in. Be sure to give Jaf some pets.
